How to Cook Quail Eggs
The best way to cook quail eggs is by steaming or boiling them, followed by an immediate ice bath. Because of their small size and delicate shells, cooking time is very short (3 to 4 minutes). Steaming is highly recommended as it yields perfectly cooked yolks while preventing the eggs from cracking in rolling water.
Common Cooking Times (Boiling Method)
If you prefer to boil the eggs directly in water, carefully lower them into a gently boiling saucepan using a slotted spoon and use these exact times:
- Soft-boiled: 2 to 2.5 minutes
- Jammy: 3 minutes
- Hard-boiled: 4 minutes
How to Cook Quail Eggs (Steaming Method)
- Prepare an ice bath: Fill a bowl with cold water and ice cubes.
- Boil water: Add a few inches of water and a splash of vinegar to a pot, bringing it to a rolling boil. (Vinegar softens the shell and makes peeling easier)
- Steam: Place the quail eggs into a steamer basket and set it over the boiling water.
- Time it: Cover the pot and steam for exactly 3.5 minutes for soft/jammy yolks or 4.5 minutes for firm, hard-boiled yolks.
- Shock: Immediately transfer the eggs to the ice bath and let them cool for 5 minutes.
